St. Aloysius College is located on Lighthouse Hill, in the heart of Mangalore City . The college is more than 100 years old (1899-1900) and is dedicated to Aloysius Gonzaga, hence the name St. Aloysius College.

Chapel

I have visited the college several times but vaguely remember going inside the Chapel. The Chapel has one of the most beautiful paintings and one often compares it to Sistine Chapel of Rome. These beautiful paintings cover the entire Chapel walls and ceiling. Anthony Moscheini, the artist who painted these was born in Italy and was sent by the Vatican to Mangalore. It took him little over two years to complete the paintings.

Once you step inside the chapel, you can hear muted gasps of people admiring the paintings. It is absolutely beautiful and one can't help but admire the sheer skill of the artist. There are two types of paintings, Fresco and Oil based. The artist passion was Fresco, where in fresh lime walls are painted and the colors get embedded into the wall itself. Little more than half the walls are covered with Fresco and remainder by Oil paintings. I spoke to a priest who was getting ready for the evening mass and he briefly explained to me about some of the paintings. The paintings are "The Birth Of Our Lord", "The Crucifixion of Jesus", "St. John The Baptist" amongst others.

These paintings were recently restored due to damage caused by dust and humidity. Some of the canvasses were re-stretched and repositioned as before.

I had to take special permission to photograph these paintings and I felt it was worth the effort, so that I can share it with MangaloreWorld readers. I hope you enjoy seeing the photographs and when you visit Mangalore, make sure you spend few minutes to visit the Chapel for yourself. It is most definitely worth it.
